Ah delightful...a scene played out at my own feeders daily...except that it is a poor red-bellied woodpecker battling grackles and starlings...

I haven't heard of grackles are they a creature of your own invention?

 God I hope not- unless the veil is disappearing entirely and my world has spilled through into the mortal one...which may be the case...hmm... I think others see them! :worry:^^; I'm unsure by what name they would go by in Europe, but they are not an indigenous species of bird to North America but came over with starlings and house sparrows and the like with European explorers. Grackles are black and fairly large- about the size of a blue-jay, looking rather like a cross between a black bird and smallish crow. They have dark metallic blue or purple heads and have a very raucous call...very aggressive birds.

Don't joke about such things we are all on the same tightrope. :D

Are we talking about starlings?

Yeah...^^; well...

No- this is distinct from starlings- and we have those in aplenty as well... Here is a nice link to a site with some information and images of them: [link] They are the bane of my feeders....

Thanks for the link Kevin, as it happens I Googled them yesterday, which is what I should have done in the first place. They are beautiful birds but if they terrorise the smaller ones then I can see why you've taken a dislike to them. We don't have them in France or back in England so they have novelty value for me. :)

It's a love-hate relationship I have with them...they are smart and bold and even sometimes endearing...but I have never liked bullies...

I very much agree about bullies, in the animal world it's all about survival of the fittest, but with people I think its more like an attempt to offload the pain or spread the damage. Better drop this depressing line of thought and go get some breakfast.:)
